Pool removal permits
start with your address.
Before choosing partial or complete pool removal, confirm which building department serves your property. The resources below cover general permitting; ask the office which requirements apply to your specific pool.
Find the office
for your property.
A mailing address is not a jurisdiction check. Give the office your street address, then describe the proposed removal method, surrounding concrete, backfill and future yard use. If the property is in another municipality, ask which office handles that location.
- City of Columbia
- Development & Inspections lists residential development guidance and demolition resources. Residential Development Coordinator: 803-545-3420.
- Richland County
- Contact Building Permitting & Inspections at 803-576-2140 to confirm the appropriate process for the property.
- Lexington County
- The Building Permits office answers general permit questions at 803-785-8130. Its website links the online application and inspection portal.
What to ask
before work starts.
- Does this proposed complete removal or partial fill-in need a permit, and who should apply?
- What site plan, owner authorization or other supporting documents should be submitted?
- Which inspections must happen, including any inspection before backfilling?
- What should the contractor document about drainage, fill material, compaction and final grading?
- Does the planned future use of the yard require engineering or other professional review?
- Do floodplain, historic district, tree protection or right-of-way reviews apply?
These are questions to resolve, not a statement that every item is required for every project.
Keep the scope
and records together.
Columbia publishes a general demolition checklist covering an application, site plan and owner authorization. It is not a pool-removal-specific specification; confirm which items apply before relying on it.
Keep the agreed scope, permits, inspection results, photos and any fill or compaction documentation. Ask the contractor how utility isolation, equipment access and debris disposal will be handled.
